Celebrating Fête de la Musique

Despite the scorching summer heat, music enthusiasts came pouring in to the gallery of Alliance Française de Dhaka to celebrate Fête de la Musique or World Music Day. Both solo artistes and groups performed in an open stage.

Sourav, a composer by passion and journalist by profession, was among the performers. The band New Bangla Opera and a student of Sangeet Research Academy, India, Salah Uddin Mahbub, performed at the programme as well. The director of Alliance Française de Dhaka, Monsieur Bruno Plasse, sat in the audience to enjoy the music.

The annual music festival is celebrated on the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere on June 21. It was initiated in 1981 by French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and by Maurice Fleuret. Official celebration began from 1982 in Paris.  The festival offers a free platform shared by professional and amateur musicians. In fact, one of the first aims of the festival was to encourage amateur musicians to perform in the streets, under the slogan "Faites de la musique" or "make music" which is a homophone of Fête de la Musique. Today, more than 120 countries and around 350 cities partake in this event.
