Michael Douglas Interview: Ant-Man and the Wasp

Advertising [x] by Joe Deckelmeier – on Jul 04, 2018 in Interviews

Hollywood icon Michael Douglas brings class to every movie he’s in. In Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, Mr. Douglas dives deeper into his character of Hank Pym. In the first film, Hank reconciled with his adult daughter Hope. In the sequel, father and daughter are searching for Janet, the wife and mother they thought was lost to them.  Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters July 6, 2018.

Screen Rant: Michael Douglas, you are a legend, sir.

Michael Douglas: Woof.

Screen Rant: It's true. When we last saw Hank, we know that he's not a fan of the Avengers. So, what does Hank think about Scott running around with the team in Civil War?

Michael Douglas: He's upset. He's like, he blew it. He got big, exposed himself, all of my work and all of that under house arrest. He is in the house. You know which house that is. Yeah, no, no. I've never been a big fan of his. I mean he wasn't my choice. You remember that. He was a cat burglar. He stole my suit, now maybe stealing my daughter. So, I'm looking at him. He needs to know, I'm watching you. You know that.

Screen Rant: That does not fly with Hank Pym at all.

Michael Douglas: No, no. No.

Screen Rant: One thing that's interesting about Hank is his relationships, in the past that he's developed, and kind of somewhat, I don't want to say ruined, but doesn't have the best standing with. But he's healed his relationship a little bit with Hope. Because now they're on a quest to find Jan. Can you talk to me about the relationship that he has with Bill Foster?

Michael Douglas: Yeah, well, Bill Foster worked at Pym Laboratories back in the earlier one, and they were competitive. They had their issues and I think Hank was threatened a little bit by Bill Foster who's a pretty smart guy in. So, it's nice to see in this one that they kind of resolve that. And more importantly, Larry Fishburne is an actor who-- It's just the joy of doing these kinds of movies that we really pop up working together.  He was everything I'd hoped for. Guy is so smart and such a wonderful actor. He's got interests outside of acting. Like a little bit, like I do, likes politics and history. So, I had a really, really good time getting to know him.

Screen Rant: Speaking of movies like this. These blockbuster franchise movies are the new trend of Hollywood. How do you feel about serialized storytelling in a cinematic format nowadays?

Michael Douglas: Well, doesn't matter how I feel. We know which way the audiences are going. But, for the kind of movies that I did, most of my career, more character driven pieces, the streaming world has come in. In fact, you know, with Netflix, Amazon and all of that. And you're seeing more and more even in that area. These mini-series, eight-hour, people are binge watching shows. So, they seem to be getting used to that. I am in awe of audiences, of how well they can connect all of these Marvel stories together. It's really amazing.

Screen Rant: Where would you like to see Hank go next?

Michael Douglas: Well since we're on this thing of, I like to see them, if there's a magic, we do movie magic in terms of flashback. How about just getting Hank back to his prime age as the original Ant-Man and kick some serious ass.

Screen Rant: I was just going to ask you that.

Michael Douglas: I'm ready. I'm here. I need a good stunt double. I'll find him.  But now you just get me-- Make me look forty years younger—

Screen Rant: Mr. Douglas, you can do anything. You're amazing.

Michael Douglas: [LAUGHTER]

Screen Rant: But congratulations on this film. It's so much fun.

Michael Douglas: So great to hear. Appreciate that.
